Electric bicycles require regular maintenance to stay safe and fun to ride. Regular maintenance activities include, but are not limited to:
- Inspecting the bike before each ride: Look at the bike carefully, check all components for signs of improper alignment, security and function. See the Pre-Ride Safety Checklist article for details.
- Maintaining correct air pressure in the tires: Over time, air tends to leak from pneumatic tires. Check the tire pressure before each ride and add or remove air as needed to maintain the correct recommended air pressure.
- Cleaning: Wipe down the bike after each ride and clean it periodically. The bike should only be cleaned with a moist rag and non-corrosive biodegradable cleaners. Notice: Pressure washers or hosing down the bike can cause water damage to electrical components and will likely void the warranty.
- Performing a yearly maintenance routine: once per year, have your local bike shop give the bike a complete tune-up.
- Replacing brake pads: The brake pads of electric bicycles wear more quickly than non-electric bicycles. Inspect brake pads regularly for wear and have a professional bicycle mechanic replace them when necessary.
For more information about maintenance, read the article titled "Recommended Inspection, Service, and Replacement Intervals".
If you are unfamiliar with any of these tasks, your local bike shop will be able to assist you with this maintenance quickly and easily.
When the useful life of a component is surpassed it can cause an unexpected loss of function, which can result in damage, serious injury, or even death. Therefore, pay attention to wear characteristics such as cracks, scratches, or changes in the color or operation of components which could indicate useful life has been exceeded. Worn components should be replaced immediately. Proper use and maintenance of your bike reduce the risk of damage, injury, and death.
